July Anniversaries

Wauna Credit Union is growing fast (if you want to join us check out our careers page). The main reason for that is the great service our amazing employees provide our members. We consider Wauna Credit Union a family, and caught up with a few family members having their anniversary this month.

Richard Bighill– 21 Years
What is your current position?

I am the Lending Support Clerk in the Lending Admin Dept.  My job is to support the rest of the department, who fund and underwrite loans.  I send Welcome Packets to all our new members to let them know everything their ownership of Wauna Credit Union gets them. I prep loan accounts and open share accounts as needed.  I also do Property Inspection Reports (including taking property photos) and appraisals for the Mortgage Dept.

What is your favorite WCU memory?
My favorite WCU memory was when my manager Sharon, who recently became our Security Officer, surprised me with my 20th anniversary present at celebration we had in July of last year for hitting $200 million in assets.  She gave me an official Seahawks jersey, with #13 Bighill!  My favorite number is 13.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
I love working with my hands, whether it’s detailing cars or doing yard work I like to spend my free time making things look good. I also spend as much time as possible with my wife of almost 25 years Shelly.

Carli Lyon– 12 Years
What is your current position?
My title is AVP of Virtual Services. I supervise and manage the Communication Center and Virtual Center of Wauna Credit Union.  Both these departments assist our members by providing exceptional service virtually via phones, email, chat, and soon through video!Carli and the Virtual Team

What is your favorite WCU memory?
After being here 12 years, there are so many memories to choose from it is hard to narrow it down to just one or 2. But what I can tell you is that I truly love investing time in my employees. Coaching them to greater heights and encouraging them to break the law of limited performance. I pride myself in Carli, her husband and kids on the riverbeing part of their growth and upward movement. There are a group of employees that I have either hired or coached that have went on to very successful in their careers here at Wauna. I like to think I played a small role in that.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
My hobbies outside of work consist of anything outdoors such as hunting and fishing and being with my family.

Heidi White– 5 Years
What is your current position?
I’m a Member Consultant in the Clatskanie branch – which means I listen to members needs and wants to help them find a solution, whatever it may be. I’ve always been somebody that focuses on helping people, so this is a great opportunity for me to really get involved with our members, and see their successes.

What is your favorite WCU memory?
The Clatskanie Branch went through a huge remodel last year. I got to assist with that from beginning to end. One of the great things about working here is they expect you to be involved no matter what your title is.  It was great to see the branch change to a modern financial center, built to meet our members’ needs.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
Anything where I can spend time with my two girls (ages 5 and 6 months) and my husband Zach. We’re homebodies so mostly we do little projects around our house. Right now we’re fixing up the backyard to take advantage of the great summer weather.

Kristen DeForrest– 1 Year
What is your current position?
I am the Astoria Safeway Member Service Manager. In this position I am responsible for building relationships with members, assisting them with their financial needs, and also helping my team members learn and grow in their position. We have a great team here, and it’s so rewarding to watch people grow.

What is your favorite WCU memory?
I have many great memories over the last year, but I will share about a young girl names Maddy.  Maddy is about 8-years-old and always stops by for stickers and coloring pages. She has wanted a stuffed eagle for several years and in October 2016 (International Credit Union Day) we were able to give her one of her own. I have never seen her smile so big. She wrote us the cutest thank you card and then even invited us to her birthday. She loves to come see us and we look forward to seeing her. I believe she will be a member for life because of the WOW service.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
I enjoy spending time at home with my husband, Cory. We enjoy having friends over, a good BBQ, and stay up to date on all our favorite TV Shows. We are Survivor fans J I also sell LuLaRoe clothing as a side business.

Backpack Program Needs Donations for Summer Months

Many children across the country must rely on free school lunch and breakfast programs in order to eat on a daily basis, and unfortunately Southwest Washington is no different. The services that provide help to the students see their funding drastically drop as their services are out of sight, out of mind for the majority people during the summer.

This leads to a huge problem for the students who use these services as a safety net. Without the funding in place come September, the programs are unable to provide the food and resources needed. Nationwide backpack programs emerged to help by supplying children in need with a backpack of prepared, or easy to prepare food, to sustain them over the weekend. The Backpack Program of Pacific County serves students at Long Beach Elementary, Ocean Park Elementary, Hilltop School, Ilwaco High School and Ocean Beach Alternative School for a total of over 200 kids per week.

Wauna Credit Union recognized the need the Backpack Program filled in the community and wanted to help. The credit union, with branches in Long Beach, Astoria, Warrenton, Clatskanie, Vernonia, St. Helens and Scappoose made the Backpack Program of Pacific County its official charity for the year and throughout the year fundraises for the organization in many different ways. Employees donate a portion of every paycheck to the Backpack program, raffle off tickets to Trailblazer games and even sell Sees Chocolate with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the charity.

“People associate backpack programs with schools, and forget about us once the mercury starts rising,” said Natalie Hanson, Backpack Program Co-Founder, “We’re really thankful that Wauna Credit Union continues to be involved. In addition to offering their support, they are offering to be a collection point for members of the community.”

Boy riding bike away

WCU has been successful so far, raising $6305 of its $12,000 goal for 2017, which has already helped to provide200 children weekend meals for 12 weeks. The summer is often a hard time to raise money for school children, as people often see the Backpack Program as a school-based endeavor. Wauna Credit Union is still actively soliciting contributions at all branches across Columbia and Clatsop counties in Oregon, and Pacific County in Washington.  in Astoria, Warrenton, Clatskanie, Vernonia, St. Helens and Scappoose, as well as the Mortgage Origination Office in Long Beach. Members can even call in to donate and have a Member Consultant transfer money directly to The Backpack Program.

“One of Wauna Credit Union’s core values is to be ambassadors in our communities and beyond,” said Jenifer Katon at Wauna Credit Union. “I cannot think of a better way to do that than through the Backpack Program. It serves the most underserved and vulnerable members of our communities. I am so thrilled to be able to give back to our communities through this program.”

More help is always needed in our area. According to Feeding America, the nationwide network of 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States, 15.7 percent of Pacific County residents are food insecure, with many of the most vulnerable children.

Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center Partners Announced

There was major news announced earlier in the week about a partnership that means more jobs for Columbia County. A group of seven companies with ties to manufacturing along with three universities announced that they have officially signed on as partners at the new OMIC (Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center) in Scappoose.

The full press release surrounding the news is below, but this is great news for the community, and for the possibility of increased employment in the area.

Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center secures industry commitments to launch major manufacturing partnership

Seven leading manufacturing companies and three Oregon universities are partnering on R&D at new Scappoose facility

Scappoose, Oregon; June 29, 2017 The Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) has taken another major step forward with the formal signing of a multi-party collaboration agreement, bringing together manufacturing industry partners with three Oregon public universities in a research and development (R&D) facility being developed in Scappoose, Oregon. This collaboration will launch OMIC’s mission to develop advanced metals manufacturing technologies that are expected to increase commercial productivity and augment state and regional capabilities for industry growth and innovation.

Pledging their commitment to the launch of OMIC R&D are companies with headquarters in Oregon, Washington and across the country:

OMIC R&D will provide economic, strategic, and technological solutions for its industry partners, bringing together the best talents and capabilities of manufacturing and three universities: Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech), Oregon State University (OSU), and Portland State University (PSU). The partnership – scheduled to launch its initial projects in 2017 – will provide “outside-in” applied research, technical advice, and support driven by manufacturing enterprises of all sizes to define the R&D focus. The facility will support new supply chain linkages, provide a critical mass of innovation, and promote the region as a major source of engineering and manufacturing expertise. Membership within OMIC R&D is expected to grow with several national and international companies already expressing interest in becoming part of the collaboration.

“This project represents an exciting opportunity for Boeing and other industry partners,” said Bill Gerry, program manager with Boeing Global Technology. “The partners are pooling resources and experience to problem solve, while also creating opportunity through research and development as well as training. The role of R&D is critical – with industry partnering with Oregon Tech, OSU and PSU – and will be instrumental in bolstering economic growth and deepening relationships with metals-related industry. This provides a glide path for Oregon manufacturers to be more competitive in the global market.”

OMIC R&D will be a state-of-the-art facility comprised of talented engineers and technologists as well as university faculty, and undergraduate and graduate students. All members of the collaboration have a track record of problem-solving related to industrial manufacturing, and access to a collective of world-class technology and equipment. OMIC has already received commitments from international machine tool and equipment manufacturers for the donation of state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used in execution of the R&D projects.

“This industry-driven collaboration is unique, offering significant leverage for industry project dollars. This gain comes from OMIC R&D’s shared equipment, as well as access to the top engineering research faculty in the state,” said Laura McKinney, vice president of Oregon Tech’s Portland-Metro Campus and a lead on OMIC R&D development. “The university research and industry members are in this for the long run, expecting to create economic value for the partners, the state, and further afield. Oregon Tech is honored to be an academic research member in the R&D facility with such top industry partners, and is proud to serve as the host university for this important initiative.”

OMIC will coordinate its R&D facility research projects with hands-on “earn and learn” training programs led by Portland Community College, to be located in a nearby facility that PCC is building. The PCC-OMIC Training Center, scheduled to open in fall 2019, will emphasize craftsmanship, professionalism, and placing graduates into high-wage, high-demand jobs.

Senator Betsy Johnson, whose district includes Scappoose where OMIC is located said, “OMIC is the most exciting economic development effort that Oregon has seen in a long time. OMIC R&D is an Oregon asset that will have a ripple effect across the state. I anticipate that OMIC will bring jobs and new industries to Oregon as the research results begin to accelerate and grow manufacturing.”

OMIC has the strong support of trade unions, including the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, which recognize the importance of training and apprenticeship programs in growing high-skill, high-wage manufacturing jobs in Oregon via innovation and industry growth. Metals manufacturing is a cornerstone industry for the Greater Portland area, with current employment estimated at nearly 28,000 and approximately 600 small, medium and large metals manufacturing companies. OMIC presents a significant opportunity for the retention and expansion of these firms and the workforce in the region.

Wauna Credit Union 2017 Scholarship Recipients

One of Wauna Credit Union’s core tenants is commitment to the communities we serve. Nowhere is that more important to us than when working with the youth of Columbia County, Clatsop County, Western Washington County in Oregon and Pacific County in Washington. From our programs aimed at our younger members like our Jumpstart Savings Accounts, to our first-time car loan program, and even our financial education programs M3 Money Club and Elements of Money. One of the more rewarding things we do is awarding our annual scholarships to well-deserving members who are continuing their education.

Scholarship banner

This year Wauna Credit Union continued our decades-long tradition, and awarded $7,500 in scholarships to 10 students who have shown commitment to their studies and to the area. The winners represented high schools from all over the footprint (Astoria, Clatskanie, Knappa, Rainier, Scappoose, St. Helens, and Vernonia), and demonstrated the great things that our young members are doing, and the great potential they have to change the future.

Earlier this week, several winners joined members of the credit union’s leadership team for a celebratory dinner, recognizing their achievement, and giving the recipients the opportunity to meet other members also furthering their education. At the dinner, our CFO David Merrell spoke to the group, reveling in their accomplishments, but also highlighting the opportunity a college education has, not just as a vocational endeavor, but also as an opportunity to learn about the world around them and better prepare them for a future as a leader.

When you look at who you are and what you do and what you’re intending to do is that you’re in position to contribute more. Not just that you hopefully make more money and do it that way, but you should be, you can be leaders. Leaders in just influencing people if that’s all it is.

We spend a lot of time trying to learn how to do well in our organization, how to create better organizations. Now you of course are geared towards that. You have a better ability to learn and you can contribute. I think that one of the best talks I’ve heard, some at the beginning of the school year addressing the student body, was will you lead. And that is so important today in society. Will you lead? Will you lead in the good? And we’re not just talking about in your environment. Will you lead in helping others to be better people and have the opportunity. And that’s one of the things that you get, a better opportunity as you go through and get better educated, a continuing education.

As we talk about ways to be better leaders now, I was listening to those talks on that as we go back and hear it again and they’re referencing books I read in high school. They had an impact. They’ve always impacted me. We’ve got engineering. We’ve got biology, science, kinesiology. Those are all good. The biggest impact in going to college is broadening of your knowledge. -David Merrell Wauna Credit Union CFO

The full list of Wauna Credit Union Scholarship winners is as follows:

  • Beau Groom (Scappoose HS); Beau will be attending Azusa Pacific University to study Systems Engineering. He fondly remembers being a mentor for 8th graders, and how it taught him to be compassionate and consistent.
  • Cassidy Whitton (Vernonia HS); Cassidy is going to Oregon State to study Business and then Law. She likes belonging to a credit union because of the personal relationship, and how they know who you are when you walk in and great you with a smile.
  • Chelsea Sapp (Knappa HS); Chelsea is set to go to Whitworth University to study Biology and Psychology. She is planning on being a doctor, but wants to full explore all the sciences while in college to have as wide of a range as possible.
  • Jacob Hanes (St. Helens HS); Jacob is heading to Portland State University to study Engineering or Pre-Med. He is excited about the commitment students at his school are showing to their education, and believes that whenever a student furthers their education past high school they set an example for graduates to come.
  • Jadelynn Pickering (Astoria HS); Jadelynn is going to Portland Community college in order to get a degree in Dental Hygiene. She has focused her life in two-year increments, with a long-term goal of buying a house.
  • Jarod Shaw (Vernonia HS); Jarod is enrolled at Portland Community College’s Diesel Mechanic’s program. He credits his participation in Track in teaching him the importance of being part of a team even when you are an individual.
  • Makenzie Jahn (Rainer HS); Makenzie is entering her sophomore year at Oregon State studying business and interior design. She ultimately wants to start her own business, and contribute back into the community.
  • Maisy Horness (Clatskanie HS); Maisy transferred to Oregon State from Lower Columbia College. She is a Kinesiology major with a goal of earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She credits volunteering at a hospital, as well as her time playing basketball with inspiring her to helping people recover from sports injuries.
  • Sage Miller (Clatskanie HS); Sage is attending University of Oregon in the fall, and will major in Business with a concentration in Sports marketing and a minor in Product Design. She wants to get a degree to help her be a strong leader that contributes back into the community.
  • Twyla Vittetoe (Clatskanie HS); Twyla will be attending Oregon State and studying Biomedical Science. She picked her major because she wants to be part of the decision-making process in medicine.

The application period for Wauna Credit Union Scholarships will begin again in February 2018. The application deadline is later in the year, and winners are announced in June. All members that are high school seniors or current college students (ages 18-22) may apply.

Teaching Children Financial Literacy

Until 1997 Oregon required personal finance classes. While schools are supposed to weave a host of things into their teaching, the reality is that most schools offer few, if any, financial literacy lessons. That means it’s up to you to teach your children important money lessons.

Two school children smiling

Paying the bills
Most kids don’t think about what keeps the lights on or the Internet powered at home. Talk to them about paying the bills. Explain that, if you fail to submit money every month to utility companies, there’d be no running water, TV, etc. It’s a good way to get them to start appreciating the role of money in day-to-day life.

Savings account
Introduce the concept of saving money by opening a savings account in your children’s names. You’ll have control, but they’ll start to get a sense of responsibility. Plus, they can see cash go in and out, earn interest and more. It’s a great, real-world experience that takes the piggy bank to the next level.

Managing money
The best way for children to learn about money is to actually have some. Whether it’s allowance, income for chores, or birthday money, give them cash when it’s appropriate and let them choose how to spend it.

They’ll probably be tempted to blow it all at once, so talk to them about priorities. Should they spend their cash on candy right now, or put some away for that bike they’ve been saving for?

Don’t forget, teaching your kids to manage their money now can put them on the path to financial success later in life.

June Anniversaries

Wauna Credit Union is growing fast (if you want to join us check out our careers page). The main reason for that is the great service we provide our members. The reason for that great service is our amazing employees. We caught up with a couple who are having their anniversary this month.

Monica Lauber  13 Years
What is your current position?
I am the VP of Mortgage. I oversee the Mortgage Department, and the great employees who help our members make their home ownership and home improvement dreams come true. I’ve been here a while, and it’s amazing to see Wauna Credit Union grow to offer more-and-more products and services, while staying true to the values of the communities we serve.

What is your favorite WCU memory?
The best thing about this job is my favorite memory changes all the time. Right now it’s helping a member who’s been with the credit union since he was in high school buy his first home.  We opened his first checking account, helped him buy a car, and even do business banking with his company.  It’s the great thing aboutPicture of Monica and her son being part of a credit union. We get to establish personal and lifelong relationships with our members.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
My free time revolves around hanging with my family. I love to get out-and-about with my husband Derek and two sons (16 and 8) Magnus and Brokk… It ’s great to see my sons develop their own interests, but also see how they were influenced by us. We are a big jiu-jitsu family so a lot of our time is spent on the mat. I also have 3 adorable American bully’s that love to play.

Jeannie Byrum  1 Year
What is your current position?
I am a Member Consultant II in the Clatskanie branch. My job is to help members with transactions, open accounts, process loans start to finish, educate on building credit, and help any member with any question they may have. (BTW this is actually a really good description). We have a hip-to-hip service philosophy, which means my number one priority is to get to know our members and really listen to their needs. It’s awesome to have the power to be the one who helps.

What is your favorite WCU memory?
It’s not a specific memory, but any time I get to laugh while doing my job. Sometimes it’s when a member cracks a joke and sometimes it’s just when something unexpected happens during the day.  We’re all about getting doing our best, but having fun while we do it.Jeannie and Andrew

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
I like to adventure with my boyfriend Andrew. Our favorite thing to do around town is go hiking up in the hills or hit the river. When we get out of town we like to stay outdoors and climb Smith Rock, or explore the trails around Mt. Hood.  I can be a homebody too. Sometimes there’s nothing better than hanging out at reading a good book, or spending time with friends and family.

Kerbie Belknap  1 Year
What is your current position?
I am an MC in Astoria. I assist members with transactions, process loans, and answer any questions members might have. I love being one of the faces of the credit union and getting a chance to talk to our members every day.Kerbie

What is your favorite WCU memory?
My favorite memory has to be the last in service day. We get to chat about how the credit union is growing our products and services to help our members even more. It was so fun to learn more about what we’re doing and see all the people I went to training with, and visit with employees that I don’t get to see often. Our CXO John Moore is quite the DJ, and makes sure that there is plenty of great music and impromptu dance-offs.

What is something you like to do when you’re not at work?
I love to cook, drink wine, watch Netflix, go on vacation and spend time with my two girls and husband.
